Dick and Leroy Borden were two young Tulsans who would become leaders in the cafeteria industry when they got their start in 1935 with a five-stool café at 707 S. Cincinnati Ave. Using $300 borrowed from their father, they bought an 8-by-12-foot lunch counter that later became Borden's Cafeteria. All of their restaurants featured a dizzying array of food choices, served fresh in abundant quantities. Chocolate icebox and lemon chess pies were among diners’ favorites. The last Borden’s, at 101 S. Lewis Ave., closed in 1989 after receiving heavy damage in a fire.
